Holliday vs. Bay
Two of the more desired players on the market are Matt Holliday and Jason Bay.

The Scoutable™ report from AriBall.com compares the two.

In many ways they are evenly matched – they produce runs almost the same (and “create” twice as much as an average player), steal bases about as often, and play in about the same many games. However, Bay has an advantage in raw power (and home-runs), driving in and scoring runs, speed, and works into a hitters count more frequently. Holliday is younger and hits line-drives more often.

Other Scoutable™ notes:

Matt Holliday:

Hits cutters more than twice as effectively as curveballs, which he hits least effectively.

Drives in runs much more than expected.

Weakness: strikes out almost twice as much as an average player (like Jason Bay).

Habits: swings often at the first pitch 39% of the time (28% is avg). Long strikezone top-to-bottom. Pulls the ball.

Swing analysis: He hits pitches across the knees very well, and can reach outside the strikezone for hits. This is an improvement from 2008, showing he can adjust to pitchers effectively. He still has challenges hitting pitches above the strikezone.

Jason Bay:

Hits sliders more than twice as effectively as changeups, which he hits least effectively.

Hits inside and outside beyond the strikezone three times as often as an average MLB batter.

Drives in runs 46% more often than expected.

Hits better in the clutch – 0.338 with RISP (in 207 AB) vs 0.201 without.

Stretches 2nd to home often on singles – 9 of 11 chances.

Weaknesses: big hole below the knees and away half – he got hits only 3% of the time off his 54 swings there.

Strikes out frequently –twice as much as an average player (like Matt Holliday). He is also one of the leaders in strikeouts “looking” with 63.

Power hitter, flyball hitter.

Swing analysis: hits in all zones very well, especially balls above the zone. This is an improvement from 2008, showing he can adjust to pitchers effectively. He has been challenged by pitches below the knees, rarely getting hits or sacrifice flies.
